Small pox

One part in this book that stands out to me takes place in chapter 16, when Huck is approached by guards who demand to search his boat looking for a runaway slave. Thinking quickly, Huck makes the guards believe that his family has small pox and how thankfull he is that the guards are there. Fearing catching the disease the guards backed off and told Huck to go down the river to get help.

Though this scene seems insignificant, I found a deeper meaning. First of all Huck is covering for Jim when he could be making money turning him in. At this point in the story Huck isn’t sure which is morally right, turning Jim in because he is a runaway slave, or helping him run away because slavery is wrong. What Huck does here, confirms his decision to help Jim run.
